You're totally right, Tom. I realized this morning: the first thing I want to know when I wake up(besides whether there have been any new posts on NBN of course) is whether anything has changed in my social life. So, I check my email, facebook, and friends' blogs before logging onto any "real" news site.

This is a great observation. I was mostly with you for the whole piece but they I read the last line and was really amazed. This is the debate and this is the answer. Everyone praises "citizen journalism" and local reporting but that is what is missing. The why. Journalists just spend more time with a story, and in the world of news. They can provide the why.
