Today

By Tom Nunlist

I died today, but it was not as I expected.
There were no tolling bells
No heads hung low, nor sorry yells
Not a soul stirred, not one was affected.

Rather things went on in normal fashion
People still ate, people still slept,
A few laughed, and a couple wept
But not for me was there such passion.

The things I felt were stranger still
I did not fear, though end was near
I shed no tear, but my keen ear
Caught the sound of a car out in the chill.

My final moments were of nothing to speak
Life did not flash before my eyes
I did not give it up to sound of raven cries
There was no drama with an orchestra peak.

There was no investigation, no needed explanation
Because nobody knew
No one had the slightest clue
Because it was only in my heart, and I gave no indication.
