Dancer Relations: at the doors, in the bathrooms

For Communications junior Andi Braunstein, Dance Marathon 2007 is the third DM she’s taken part in without being a dancer. A member of both the Dancer Relations committee and the Advertising committee, Braunstein said the “committee atmosphere” she found her freshman year on Dancer Relations was too fun to give up.

Any dancer who wanted to get out of the Louis Room during the first block had to get past Braunstein first. That block, she was responsible for escorting dancers to the bathroom and making sure no one left unattended. But her duties would change as the night went on.

“We kind of have to protect the dancers,” she said. “Make sure they’re safe, help them if they’re hurt, make sure they’re having fun.”

That means some blocks, Dancer Relations members become dancers themselves and pump up participants on the dance floor. Other blocks, they take dancers to the showers, give them foot massages and go on “potty patrol” — hang out in the bathroom and make sure no one falls asleep. Braunstein said she’s okay with those duties, though they might seem awkward.

“The idea [of 'potty patrol'] is uncomfortable, obviously,” she said. “But it’s alright.”
