Rubbing down those exhausted feet

A gray tarp lies in the middle of a Norris hallway. Along the wall, a line of Dancer Relations members sit against the wall, an arsenal of sanitation devices spread out in front of them. A bottle of liquid hand sanitizer, a box of green latex gloves and a bottle of baby powder.

This is DM foot massage alley, a small stretch of physical pleasure for dancers who may feel like they’ve run a marathon by now.

“Dancers are going to get their feet massaged by us in under two minutes,” Bryan Kharbanda said, green gloves already on.

The Weinberg senior said the prospect of rubbing foreign feet doesn’t worry him in the least. He said, “I mean, theoretically, they have taken a shower.”

Fellow Dancer Relations member Kristin Scovic also said the toe touching isn’t that disturbing, just a little gross. The Communications junior is new to the committee game, but has been a dancer in DM before.

She said the foot rub helps immensly, based on personal experience.

“I know how good it felt [when I danced],” Scovic said from the tarp.

Still, there are a few foot abnormalities that could make her uneasy, like warts. Fellow foot-rubber Lily Becker hopes that dancers will keep their socks on. She has never given a foot massage before, but wants to make hers feel good. The Weinberg sophomore added, “I hope they keep their feet a reasonable distance away from my feet.”

Soon, the students who took a shower reappear on the second floor. They sit down on the grey tarp, and Dancer Relations go to work, rubbing participants toes and feet gently. When the two minute foot rub is done, the massagers apply a liberal amount of baby powder onto the feet, and then the dancers are on their way.

Eugenio Vargas said the massage was a godsend.

“It was great,” he said with audible pleasure.

The Communications sophomore said the rub was splendid, but it may not have been the best part of the dancing break.

“The massage was great, but lying down was better,” Vargas said. “It’s great for no other reason than to sit down.”
