In a tiny booth above it all

While hundreds of dancers bust a move on the Louis Room floor, Zach Kahn looms over them, tucked away in a tiny room suffocated with computers and wires. But from this lonely alcove, he controls every image broadcast on the DM big screen.
The Weinberg sophomore is the technical director for Louis Room Productions.
“It’s hard having to get everything ready in short notice,” Kahn said while flipping a switch on one of the many consoles littering the room.
Kahn said he didn’t participate in DM last year, but was wowed by what he saw while visiting.
“I came and visited last year,” he said. “I was really impressed by what I saw.”
As the current song ends and segues into another number, Kahn hits several illuminated, orange buttons. Soon, a new video appears on the super-sized screen. The headset-clad director, even with the screen safely displaying the correct images, still focuses steadfastly on the many computer units around him.
Kahn said he does take measures to make sure he remains sane.
“I get up a lot, walk around outside,” he said.
Kahn now focuses his attention on a laptop resting on a chair. He hits several keys, and then backs off, again centering his gaze on the pieces directly in front of him. He said DM is a very worthy organization to toggle switches for.
“It’s a really great organization,” he said. “Money is definitely for a good cause.”
