“11 innings, no problem”

So how good was Saturday for sports? First, Northwestern takes Minnesota into double-overtime (and wins), then the Indians take the Red Sox into overtime (and win). Tacking on Friday’s extra-inning affair in Arizona, it’s been a long weekend in my sports world. The weekend’s two extra-inning games ended in very different way; the NLCS ended with a confusing screw-up, while the ALCS ended with an awe-inspiring bullpen battle and offensive outburst. Isn’t that telling?

“Hater of snakes”

I think I’ve kind of adopted the Colorado Rockies as my team this postseason. They’re the only ones who my predictions about have even come close being accurate. Plus, I guess they’re kind of close to Seattle, which is where I grew up. Last night they rolled over the Diamondbacks again despite the heavy rains at Coors Field. I continue to be thoroughly unimpressed with the team from Arizona and am not surprised that the Rockies are headed towards a series sweep.

Meanwhile, boy I could not have been more wrong about Sabbathia and Carmona. They both pitched terribly. The Indians should consider themselves lucky that they came out of those two games at Fenway with a split. Game three is going to be absolutely critical for the Tribe. Can Jake Westbrook step up? Dice-K has been anything but good recently so it might be another slugfest between these two teams. The Indians need to take two of three at home to even stand a chance when they go back to Fenway. They’ve shown that Schilling is not the pitcher he was in 2004 and Dice-K has already been exposed. It’s simply a question of whether or not they can beat Josh Beckett. Mike Lowell is the X factor for Boston’s offense. Everyone knows about Manny and Big Papi, but Lowell is just as dangerous. I think the Indians can pull this off, but they need MUCH better efforts from Sabbathia and Carmona.

“I miss the Angels : (”

Quite frankly, I have lost a fair amount of interest in these playoffs since the Championship Series started. The games have been great, I just don’t feel emotionally attached to any of these teams. I hold nothing but hatred for the Red Sox, I’m more or less indifferent towards the Indians (though I kinda want to see them do well so fellow contributor Jason up there goes nuts), and for the NLCS teams…whatever. I like the fact one of these clubs will get in, but that doesn’t mean I give a hoot about them.

So, I suppose I should back one of these teams, because that’s the American bandwagon way. I can’t fully support either AL team, as that would indicate the Angels weren’t the actual best team in the league (I tell you, if they were healthy, and the pitching didn’t collapse, and we could hit, and…), so onto the west coast. I actually technically kinda worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks back in high school, as I was a ticket taker/parking lot attendant/scoreboard operator extraordinaire for the Lancaster Jethawks, the once Single-A affiliate of the D-Backs (now with the wretched Red Sox). But even with the moderate pay, free baseball action and sweet, sweet nachos, I’m going with the Rockies, mainly because they stuck it out with their purple unis, unlike Arizona, who abandoned this for this. I have a special place for purple in my heart (thanks NU), so I prefer Colorado’s unis to the D-Back’s maroon get-up.

Yes, I am choosing a baseball allegiance based on team uniforms. Fire away, sports fans.
