Help Medill rename itself! (Update 1)
By
Today Medill sent out an e-mail inviting students to be on faculty committees. That message mentioned one very special group:
Name of Medill, chaired by Prof. Steve Duke. This committee will solicit input from students, alumni, advisory board and industry leaders on a possible name change for Medill.
At first we at NBN were shocked. Name change?! But then we got to thinking: Maybe the Medill School of Journalism is a terrible name for our school.
What would better reflect Medill? We came up with a few ideas:
- The Medill School of Lowered Expectations
- The Medill School of Charticles
- Integrated Marketing Communications
- Qatar West
- The myMedill School of Web Design
- The Medill School of Firing Our Best Professors
- The Jonathan Love School of Nice Hats
- Muck Fedill
- The North by Northwestern School of Failed Devo Writers
- The John Lavine School of Relevant, Differentiated Bullshit
- The Medill Memorial Parking Lot
More importantly, we want to hear from you! What do you think Medill should call itself?
UPDATE, 2 A.M.: The Daily’s story is here; apparently parodies don’t go far enough. The quote:
Lavine did not comment on specific names being discussed, but said that in informal conversations he’s had with students and others, adding “Integrated Marketing Communications” to the name was a popular idea.
Um, what?

This is the best post I have ever seen on Northbynorthwestern.

Excellent. Tom, forget journalism, I think you have a job as Medill’s new PR rep!

Spencer Kornhaber and Patrick St. Michel came up with many of those lines, and deserve credit too. :D

I can’t imagine what those meetings will look like. But I’m in as long as I get to vote with one of those clicker things Duke uses in 201.
P.S. “Qatar West” made my week.

Let’s make Muck Fedill shirts. I’m a fan :)

I’ll take a shirt. This is really ridiculous, I better still get Medill printed on my diploma.

Admit it, most of us would join that committee just to spend more time with Steve Duke. What a lovely man.
But seriously, let’s just rename the school for J-Love. We’d all be screwed without him.

A popular idea with whom? Himself? Why are they wasting time on this when they should be trying to figure out why the professor for my EDIT class this quarter was given the wrong schedule for his class by Medill, and thus showed up on one day with no students, and then didn’t come to class when all the students did? Quit changing the name of TM and everything else and start communicating better amongst the faculty and staff. A lot of things - like screwed up TM assignments and confusion in classroom assignments - wouldn’t happen if a bunch of journalists learned how to talk to each other.

Yup…As a Weinberg student I have to say that I find this shit hilarious. Fiddle, Lavine! Fiddle as your Rome burns!

While I selfishly vote for adding IMC to the name as an IMC grad I understand how it will dilute what Medill is thought to stand for. But I am tired of being the red-headed step-child (my aplogies for offending any stepchildren or redheads) and would like someone to be proud to own our program. I would have liked to have graduated from a college at NU that means something to my degree when, in reality, it is the NU on the diploma that will get me my jobs (not complaining about that). Most people ‘get’ that Medill=journalism. They don’t get what IMC is doing there. And that is the problem.
I also vote for the Muck Fedill shirts, if for no other reason than it makes me laugh.
