Find a date, get paid

Northwestern students often complain that there’s no dating scene on campus. That’s about to change.

In a new research study about romantic attraction, six two-hour sessions of speed-dating will be held Nov. 5 and 6. Up to 150 of NU’s finest will be paid $5 for completing a 30-minute questionnaire and another $5 for a 30-minute pre-session. An additional $46 is also available for filling out an optional short questionnaire 12 times from November to February.

Headed by Dr. Eli Finkel and Paul Eastwick, a psychology graduate student, the study aims to better understand the biochemistry of romance and what people do when they flirt. With these scientific ambitions come drawbacks – the dates may be audio- and videotaped. A saliva sample will also be necessary.

“We can see what makes people attracted to one another or how relationships evolve after two people meet one another,” Eastwick wrote in an autobiography. His research has focused on initial attraction, people’s theories regarding their own romantic lives, and the role of attachment in early relationship development.

Although this speed-dating event partners participants with the opposite sex, a same-sex experiment may be in the works.

“We are getting the names and schedules of any and all people that might be interesting in participating in such an event. If there is enough interest, we will hold a same-sex event,” Eastwick said.
