Girl Talk’s great, but who is opening?

Unlike a lot of folks on campus, I got my tickets to the big Girl Talk show coming to NU later this month. But, as I skipped a 10 a.m. class and stood in line at Norris, I wondered who was actually opening for the famed mash-up DJ.

Of course, I didn’t have any answers, but buzz among friends indicated two NU groups would open for Girl Talk. One, The Butterfly Assassins, are a rock group (who, btw, are playing a free show at Metro this Friday). The other rumored group is some NU rap group, the name of which I tragically don’t know. I hope someone could enlighten me.

I’m all for the Northwestern music getting a shot to show off, especailly before a sold-out show brimming with buzz. But…part of me would be willing to forego the NU bands if it meant Dan Deacon could open. Deacon, out of Baltimore, creates cartoony dance songs loaded with electronic beeps and distorted vocals, sampling Woody Woodpecker’s demented laugh and singing about cats, bats and all sorts of furry animals. He’s been touring with Girl Talk for most of the past year, and opens for the DJ at his two Metro dates this weekend.

I’m holding out hope that, since he’s already in town, Deacon will mosey on over to Norris with his equipment and put on a brief show. He’s a cool performer, one I’d personally love to see live. But, unless it just hasn’t been announced yet, I’m simply hoping.

But whatever, I got tickets, who am I to be complaining?

Writer’s Note: Turns out the opening acts were announced after all. The Butterfly Assassins and The Hustle Group will open. Sorry I did not know this when I wrote this. Still, needs more Dan Deacon.

  1. I actually booked this show (Niteskool booked the bands, A&O joined on later to supply light and sound). The reason there was no Dan Deacon was that after paying Girl Talk’s honorarium, Niteskool had 600 dollars left for the concert, which was part of the reason we got A&O to help out.
