Former Juilliard director picked to lead NU jazz program
The former artistic director of the jazz studies program at The Juilliard School, Victor Goines, is set to direct Northwestern’s jazz program starting Spring Quarter.
The School of Music ended the jazz major last spring after the program went without a director for more than a year. Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery announced Goines’ appointment in November.
Goines, a clarinetist and saxophonist, has worked at Juilliard for the past seven years, creating its jazz program. He has toured worldwide with ensembles since 1993 and leads his own quartet and quintet.
The School of Music’s current jazz faculty will be dismissed, Montgomery said in the Chicago Tribune this month, to make way for a revamped program under Goines.
