Who backs whom politically in the musical world
By
Apparently there was a debate last night for a little tiny thing called the presdiency. Or, more appropriately, who would represent the Democrats on the ballot. I’m not a very political person (I almost stole a Dole-Kemp sign I saw on the side of the road in 1996 becasue it looked rad, and that’s the closest I’ve come to making a big political stand), but I understand why people would care about who is running their country. Musicians are people too (!) and also support presidential candidates. But who supports whom? Here’s a quick rundown to show you where your favorite artists stand on the big issues.
- Bright Eyes: Supports Barack Obama, and played various shows in Iowa to help rally up the young to vote for Obama. Hey, his emo-tricks worked!
- The Cool Kids: Back Barack as well. They’re from Chicago, what do you expect?
- Rhymefest: Chicago rapper also has Obama-fever, but he’s written out a long argument as to why Barack is America’s best bet. He actually got into a debate with…..
- Lupe Fiasco: ….who supports Hillary Clinton. Wow, the first musician hyping Hill. I wonder if this is the start of a new trend?
- Win Butler (of Arcade Fire) - Nope! Win supports Obama, and slammed Hillary, saying she resorts to “bullshit” techniques.
- The Fiery Furnaces: I expected this quirky duo to back Ron Paul or some other fringe candidate, but they actually are fired up for Obama. Color me suprised. Again, also from Illinois.
- M.I.A.: Most likely hates all of them. Just taking a guess here.
And that’s all I’ve got for now, though I’m sure you track down plenty of other artist picks. In a real stunner (or not), most artists support Obama, especially the young ones not named Lupe. I feel older folks would be on the Hillary train, and I expect Elvis Costello to play a concert for Mrs. Clinton soon enough. Well, it’s up to the American people, and that’s what matters most.
Oh, and the Republicans? Not much, except for this knee-slapper of a MySpace page, “Musicians For Mike Huckabee,” featuring all-stars like Anberlin, Brad Paisley and Jars of Clay. Actually, cycling through the “friends page” more, this stuff is fascinating: did you know Dntel, Phoenix and Ryan Adams support Mike Huckabee? And that they exist in the same page as Nickelback and Switchfoot? IS HUCKABEE THE RIGHT CHOICE?????
