Concerts for the week

Show of the Week

Liars and No Age, Feb.5, 8 p.m. at Metro

I’m going to avoid hyping up Liars because, if you read this, I’m guessing you have a fair knowledge of how awesome these Australians can be. They are worth the price of the show alone. Instead, I’m going to take this space to throw praise on a cool band from my neck of the woods (LA), No Age. The group’s a duo, one man on guitar the other handling drums and vocals, and they create stripped down punk that somehow sounds louder and stronger than a four-person band. I’m really high on this band, and think they produce one of the more intriguing sounds I’ve heard as of late. And, as a survivior of one of their live shows, I can tell you they are also a lot of fun (best mosh pit of my lfie). Go check out the next huge thing now. Video proof below.

Best of the Rest

Daniel Johnston, Feb. 6, 9 p.m. at Metro

One of music’s most fascinating figures, Johnston is a bipolar singer-songwriter responsible for some of the most painstakingly blunt music of the past twenty years. His songs waver between child-like and terrifying, images of cuteness juxtaposed next to ones of pure terror. He recently had a much-lauded documentary done about him, The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Definitely one of music’s more intriguing artists, catch him Wednesday night….if you are 21. Tickets cost $21, oddly enough.

Yeasayer and MGMT, Feb. 8, 7 and 10:30 p.m. at Schubas

Great double bill to close out the week. Yeasayer and MGMT both hail from Brooklyn, where all the amazing acts come from now a days, but bring drastically different styles to the stage. The two-person MGMT evoke earlier Of Montreal, blasting out electro-swathed power pop coated with just enough 60’s nostalgia. Yeasayer steal this show, though. The group falls into the same “freak folk” label as Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear, but offer their own unique take on the bustling genre, producing very folkish music with an eye towards pop. Their debut album All Hour Cymbals was one of the better debuts of last year, and you should hunt down their awesome song “2080,” right now. Tickets cost $10, but are sold out. Maybe if you say you are from Brooklyn, you’ll get some help.

Avoid at All Costs

Mika, Feb. 5, 7 p.m. at House of Blues

For all my rants about how I hate certain artists, I can admit that very few bad music seriously angers me. It may suck to me, but if it entertains someone, it must be doing something right. And it’s still an original sentiment expressing something, and that’s good, even if it blows. London-by-way-of-Lebanon “artist” Mika falls into the very, very rare category of “musician who does something I legitimately hate.” Mika doesn’t make music as much as he pretends to be Freddie Mercury who owned all the Scissor Sisters’ albums, and loads his music up with benign lyrics pretending to be controversial (fat girls are treated badly! gay people have sex too!) and candy-colored pop trying to be unique, but just sounding stupid. This video, for his song “Happy Ending,” encapsulates everything I hate about Mika.

I formulated a long, drawn-out rant about why he’s bad for music, but I’ll keep it simple: Mika tries desparately to be important and impactful, but he’s just all looks, no soul, an artist with nothing to say trying to be relevant. He’s everything wrong with popular music.

And of course, this show is sold out.

Spelling fixed, thanks for pointing that out. But my stupidity still doesn’t erase the fact Mika used to write jingles for Orbitz chewing gum. Anybody who used to write jingles deserves a good “spewin.”

    Patrick,

I’m sincerely happy for you.. You started at the very top, you had no ladder to climb, right?

Get something better to do, than to criticize someone that the age of 11 knew what he wanted in life. He did an Orbitz jingle when he was 13, they right question to ask is, how many 13 year old can actually say they’ve achieved that??

    Ah, ignorance at it’s finest.
What makes ME mad most about music these days,
is people like YOU who don’t know what they’re talking about and wouldn’t know a soulful, genuine, talented artist if it bit you in the ass.

    Patrick,

Your hatred of Mika seems to be more a reflection on you, than him. I have seen him in concert, and he puts on an amazing, heart filled show that really brings happiness to his fans. You should be a little more open minded about him. :)

well i suppose the fact that he sold out his north american tour, that he played in front of 11000 adoring fans in montreal means that we should all worry about your simple minded opinion.
when was the last time 11000 people read your blog monsieur?

Hmm…Well, I don’t see how you could make such a claim, when it seems like you didn’t even go. I saw him in LA, and the atmosphere there was so happy, only the most hardened personality would not be able to smile. Mika and his music has such a unifying effect on people. Though I barely knew anyone there, I felt like a family, all united by the same love and joy and happiness that Mika brings.

did you even bother to go see his show? or just talking to talk?

    Patrick,

Mika doesn’t write about how gay people can have sex too, and if you’re referring to lollipop, i suggest you listen one more time because you are way off. If you are going to bash an artist, please make sure that you know what you are talking about first. What does doing an Orbitz jingle as a kid have anything to do with his career now? He doesn’t go to concerts and sings jingles. this just means that he had talent, even as a child. I started laughing when i read that you said he has no soul. Mika has more soul that nearly every artist out there. If you did research and knew his background, or even took the time to understand his songs, you would know that what he sings is more relevant to life and how it’s lived than ninety percent of the music out there now. You completely missed the point of the song Big Girl because you were already bent on hating him, so i won’t even bother. I’m not sure why i’m spending so much time writing this, because it isn’t worth it. If you are going to write a negative review, please make sure that you get your facts straight and write it about somebody who deserves it. Of which you did neither here.

    Better luck in the future,
    -LG

I’d like to clarify the “gay people can have sex to line” refers to his song “Billy Brown,” about a guy with a wife and kids who “fell in love with another man” according to Mika’s lyrics. Not “Lollipop.” Thanks for the comment!

  19. LG said,

Alright, well is it the artist that you “hate” or is it a lyric from Billy Brown? Billy Brown was a real person that Mika knew. The song is about a man who has everything going for him, but then he falls in love with another man. I’m not sure where the theme “Gay people can have sex too” fits in with that. While sex may be a part of the song, as it is with many songs today, the message you got out of it doesn’t fit within the song. There is nothing sung about how gay men can have sex in Billy Brown, in fact, the only sex directly mentioned is between him and another girl. I wouldn’t mind if you had posted that you just didn’t care for his music- to each their own, right? But it’s when you say that you absolutely hate it and i see that you hate it for the wrong reasons and haven’t a clue what you’re talking about that i have a problem.

He is genuine and I pity people who do not see that he is someone who cares for his friends, family, his fans and anyone who he meets. He is pure love and I am sorry Patrick , but something must be very sad and wrong in your life. Are you unhappy?

You said one thing that makes sense and you should have left it at that: “It may suck to me, but if it entertains someone, it must be doing something right” Mika’s music not only entertains some, but for many millions around the world it is the most soulful music to come along in ages. Finally, someone doing something from their heart and soul instead of trying to make a buck. Mika’s fans are the ones tired of the horrible garbage played on the radio today. They are searching for and finally found someone with a genius music talent who is true to himself and doesn’t sell out to the music idiots like you. (Thank GOD!) Mika’s following is huge and extreme and he will have people listening to him for a lot longer than anyone will ever listen to you. Sorry, better dig deeper next time and find some true heart and soul in your reporting. That was the most shallow and worthless bit of reporting that I have read in a long time.

    Mika polarizes people.

    Look at you all.

And Mika doesn’t give a shit what you think. He writes and sings the songs and quite a few people buy the albums (over 4 million now I believe) and every show he does round the world is at capacity.

And the video you hate so much has over 3 million hits on youtube.

Every once in a while you might be forced, eventually, to eat your words.

He’s one of the nicest guy in the world and he is so generous with his fans. He always stay simple in spite of his HUGE SUCCESS. I’m really not surprise that all his concerts are sold out.

    Dear Patrick,
I’m a strong believer of the phrase to each his own, so I’m glad you’ve formulated your own opinions about what you hear instead of taking it for granted and listening to the mind numbing mess that most people these days listen to, as well as much of the garbage that the music industry produces. However, having your own beliefs does not entitle you the right to slander other’s. And as a comment to your comment about artists who write jingles: the Beatles wrote jingles before they made it big. One of the main reasons why their music gained such popularity and roused such a frenzy. So I guess you’ve got to plead your case to the chorus my friend, because you dealt the cards yourself, and the odds don’t look too good. Sorry, but you can’t argue with an international success.

Well well, you’ve learned how the fans come out of the woodwork when someone starts with the Mika-bashing.

Mika might be camp, you might find his similarities to other acts unnerving, and the dancing hands in the Happy Ending video might give you nightmares - but the fact remains that his music truly resonates with people. That’s why you have 20+ comments of people up in arms about what you said.

I have to disagree with your comment about him having nothing to say and sounding stupid. If you were to have the pleasure of seeing him live, you’d see that in the eyes of thousands of people he connects with his audiences quite strongly. It’s fine that you think he’s “all looks and no soul”, but he’s got one hell of a worldwide fan base that clearly begs to differ with you.

Anyway, huge Mika fan here, met him, appeared in his “fat girls are treated badly” video!, he’s lovely, funny, sincere, unique, talented……..fills my life with joy and I want him to be around forever.
I’ve lost count of the places I’ve made this point but if he wore lots of black and had a habit of some sort (drink, drugs, self harming) I bet you’d have something more positive to say about him.

Where’s the praise for being a roll model, working hard, living well, treating his family/friends/fans with respect and beating the odds to overcome the past??

As someone else said…there’s actually little point in writing these comments as you won’t budge but to support this amazing new star I will make them anyway.

“He’s everything wrong with popular music.” oh so it’s not the people doing an album full of songs like ” I wanna f**k you” and “Let’s get down tonight”
Yes,you are so right,I’m sorry for ever questioning your wisdom

“Mika tries desparately to be important and impactful, but he’s just all looks, no soul, an artist with nothing to say trying to be relevant. ”

And how did you establish what he desperately tries and tries not to do?
He’s all looks? that’s so nice of you to say

And again,we go back to the oh so great masterpieces about screwin and asses that really make a statement,I mean that is something that needs to be said right?

How did we get to the ‘no soul’ part again? Because it seems you have undiscovered powers that help you establish the amount of soul someone has. Have you met to him? Have you ever sat down with him and talked to see what he is like?
Yes,I thought so…so don’t throw your anger and frustrations on a man you know nothing about

p.s: on a scale from 1 to 10,how homophobic are you? (I’m just asking because it seems to be a common assumption that he’s gay for some reason)

    Dear Patrick,
Just like all other people here I’d like to comment on your comments about Mika. Do you take yourself seriously? Do you think others will take you seriously when you post such bull as you did?
Now to point out some things:

“It may suck to me, but if it entertains someone, it must be doing something right.”

It’s doing a lot right, in fact, Mika has achieved much more than you ever will. Are you a wannabe Perez Hilton or maybe a journalist who is justifiably turned down at every newspaper?

“Mika doesn’t make music as much as he pretends to be Freddie Mercury who owned all the Scissor Sisters’ albums, and loads his music up with benign lyrics pretending to be controversial (fat girls are treated badly! gay people have sex too!) and candy-colored pop trying to be unique, but just sounding stupid.”

Mika doesn’t pretend to be Freddie Mercury. If you weren’t that superficial as you are and actually researched (like real journalists do) you would know this. You would know what Big Girl was about and in fact also know that Billy Brown is about a man who is bisexual. But you’re just to short-sighed that everything you consider not normal is gay. Way to go! About it sounding stupid, to me, you’re sounding quite stupid and I can’t believe I’m wasting my time on you. But I guess it needs to be said.

“I formulated a long, drawn-out rant about why he’s bad for music, but I’ll keep it simple: Mika tries desparately to be important and impactful, but he’s just all looks, no soul, an artist with nothing to say trying to be relevant. He’s everything wrong with popular music.”

Yes and it was everything except reasonable and interesting. Seriously, if you want people to take you serious, do something about this. If your ‘critism’ would be constructive, I would let it rest. That’s okay. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. But as a reporter on concerts, we’re not interested in your silly rants.

“And of course, this show is sold out.”

And luckily, there are people with common sense in this world. Unlike you.

    Have a nice day Patrick.

I think you have ruined your life and you just take out all your anger on people that have never ever did or have done anything wrong to you! Why do you have to do this??? Was it THAT important to you??? You really need help!!! Mika has a soul and how DARE you say something so unthoughtful like that??? I THINK ITS YOU THAT HAS NO SOUL! Mika has tried so hard to come this far and he DESERVES THIS CAREER!!! NOT YOU!!! Something is very wrong with you if you needed to say all of this just to show your emotions! What about our opinians of Mika??? WE DON’T NEED TO HEAR YOUR SILLY, STUPID, UNTHOUGHTFUL COMMENTS!!! I didn’t have to sit hear and write all of this just for my heath! Its because I love Mika with all my heart I don’t care what you think or say, but I’m asking you, YOU AND YOU ONLY to think about these things, were they really necessary, did you really need to do this? I think your answer is NO. And don’t you DARE go off making nasty comments and reports about those who DO adore Mika. I know if i was criticised by you, i would definately reconsider my career in music because what you have to say is obviously so important!

Either that, or seeing as you’re God’s gift to music itself, i’d pay with the millions i’ve earned from my debut album for you to be stranded on some rock in the ocean along with Heather Mills and that f***ing Archbishop of Canterbury so you can further your discussions on homosexuality and how unsatisfied you are with your own life.

By the way? Are you actually secretly gay, but you can’t admit it because you still live at home with your mum and she reads this site from time to time? It’s ok! Don’t worry! Some day you’ll be able to get a real job and find a place of you’re own! Then you can have all the gay sex you want!

And yeah, fine, you don’t like his music, he’s musical marmite, but get over it. And don’t be so pathetic as to ‘legitimately’ hate someone you’ve never met. How old are you? Seven? Seven and a half, maybe?

I agree with what my fellow Mika lovers have said. Mika has a mind that doesn’t need encouragement from you or any of the other critics to flourish. His genius is his music and beautiful lyrics. How can anyone be so critical of someone who cares so much about the general public, who wants to give us great music? Entertainers give a rare gift to this pessimistic world…They allow people to journey away from life for a few hours. Mika is a beautiful person, with a grounded, down to earth persona. I wish people around here were more open minded, more willing to accept him. He doesn’t need anyone’s approval, but he deserves it. You use the word “hate” so liberally, about a person you don’t even know. I’d say get rid of the teenage drama queen attitude and give us a constructive critique. There is a way of presenting yourself in a classy way. Obviously, since you are oblivious to why Mika is amazing you were also unaware of the amount of support he has from those of us in this world willing to see the beauty he presents.

What you said completely contradicts the rest of your reveiw. You said if it entertains “Someone” [then the music] is doing something right. The music, and the artist, entertained over 1000 people at the House of Blues. As far as I’m concerned, “over 1000 people” certainly fits into the category of “someone”. So please, say you hate the music all you like, but give it the credit it deserves!!!!

It’s the sad reality of my country, which in no way reflects my attitude of Mika.

This article is written by an American student at an American school talking about a concert taking place in America.

Emily, can you not read or something?
Havent you noticed that everyone who has posted here said that ALL HIS CONCERTS IN AMERICA HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT!
God, just because he isnt on tv every second like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears doesnt mean he isnt popular in the U.S.
Maybe you should start thinking out of this little bubble of yours.

patrick is entitled to his own opinion; leave him alone. ripping on him and rudely insulting his views goes against the beauty, love and peace that mika fans claim to find in his music. i wish NU students would get more riled up about bigger issues than the popularity of some random pop-star.

We all understand that this is about an American’s experience. But his experience was definatley not my own. I was at The HOB gig and experienced something completely amazing. His opinions were presented adamently, and without hesitation. It doesn’t matter to me if he goes to college or not, he’s still a writer giving his opinion. I appreciate this, since I too write editorial content. But if I disagree with something he’s said, why not use this handy little comment box to voice my opinion?

Ok, so just because Mika managed to sell out small venues, has a “beautiful soul” and charted at #57 (wow) doesn’t make his music any less derivative or uninteresting. And I like Britney et al even less than Mika, so don’t accuse me of being an MTV whore either.
Anyway, I have a paper to write, and 90% of you should probably go learn grammar.

If his music truly sucked dont you think he wouldnt have made it big in less than a year???
I know this is a long comment but you irritate the SH*T out of me!!!
You say he was desperatly trying to be important and impactful, if thats the truth then why didnt he just make more POPULAR COMMERCIAL music?? we all know he can… He sends out a good message and no its got nothing to do with fat girls and gay men- he sends out that everyone should be themselves regardless of what shameless ppl like you think!!!!!!

@ Emily, as a matter of fact, over here in Europe where most people have taste in music (no offense Americans!) Mika sells out huge venues, and he has sold over 4 million albums worldwide. I do not believe if he wasn’t talented, over 4 million people would buy his record and the amount of hits he had doesn’t exactly say he’s a one-hit-wonder.

    Check this sweetheart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mika_%28singer%29

Ofcourse you’re allowed to not like him. But don’t say he’s a one hit wonder, ’cause even without writing a paper about Dolphins like you have to do, he made it and you still have to prove you can do that too.

    Hey guys, let’s play nice.

Patrick is entitled to his opinion, and Mika lovers are entitled to theirs. Just how no one should hate Mika because Patrick does, no one should love Mika because you all do. And personally attacking Patrick, who I daresay none of you have met, is no better than him personally attacking Mika, who he has never met.

So please, offer constructive criticism about his writing style or his spelling. Lay out your opposing opinion. But please don’t degrade the commentary to personal attacks. As someone who does like mika, it makes you all sound childish and hypocitical, something that doesn’t do you, or mika, any service.

O!M!G! I can’t believe you all would write that! I mean it is just so mean and hateful! Why do you all hate Patrick so much!?! He is the nicest, best, coolest person on the entire planet! I can’t believe you would judge him so quickly on 100 words he wrote about Mika!

Seriously though. I’m sure you all have met Patrick and haven’t just used one paragraph of writing to call him homophobic/secretly gay, compare him to Hitler and accuse him of trying to bring down Mika’s career. You wouldn’t want to do that same thing you are accusing him of doing or anything. His comments were very strongly worded, but really all he was doing was telling you not to go to a concert. He is not trying to be a “big bully” or trying to do anyone any harm and contrary to many peoples’ opinion, his career as a journalist doesn’t hinge on Mika, or anyone else’s, downfall.

Lets all just laugh at some more music comics.

Clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about. It is understandable to simply dislike a certain type of artist, however you basically state that MIKA is not a artist, then follow this up with textbook “criticism.” What did you do? Google “Mika, Criticism” and copy/paste what you found?

As an Opera singer, I will correct you: Mika is VERY talented.

P.S. No soul? If you’ve ever seen him play “Any Other World” (ever even hear of that one?) I think you’d disagree.

    1. mika didnt write for orbit, he sang for it!
    2. big girls is about the butterfly lounge, not about hate and how theyre treated unfairly!
    3. billy brown is not about “gay have sex too” its about a male who falls in love with another man, cant handle his life any longer and escapes to mexico where he finds the woman he can share his secrets with! listen to it again!
    4. If your talking about lollipop it was written for his sister! it has the most dark theme behind it and yet 4 year olds love it!

I dont think any of us have a problem with people loving or hating mika, theres very few people in between! just it helps to get your facts straight, and perhaps go see him live BEFORE you can make such broad comments!

I am currently disgusted with some of the comments my fellow Mika fans have left. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the second someone says something wrong about Mika (who himself claims he is the Marmite of pop… meaning you either love him or you hate him) you personally attack them, calling them names, suggesting he is homophobic or a closet gay.

In what world is it right to say such things? Would you accept someone saying such things about you or about Mika just because your opinion differs from them.

Everyone has different tastes and not everyone likes the same thing. Just because someone doesn’t like Mika doesn’t make them ‘losers and idiots’ as I believe someone referred to them.

Where is the open mindedness, where is the respect for others opinions? Yes Patrick gave a negative opinion and yes it may have been insulting. But that does not give anyone the right to insult him back.

I suggest you all take a hard look at what you have posted and ask yourself whether you would allow someone to say that about you if you disagreed with them.

Seriously, as a member of the mfc I am asking you… please give it a rest. You’re derogatory comments are giving mika fans everywhere a bad name.

And it’s a fun place. You should go sometime! The most fun and sexiest thick chicks ever congregated to dance their asses off and have a great time doing it!!
