DU members moved to “alumni status”

Some members of Northwestern’s chapter of Delta Upsilon have been placed on “alumni status” after the the fraternity’s international administration decided to “reorganize” the fraternity, a DU member confirmed Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

DU made headlines a few weeks ago after their recruitment event on Jan. 8 featured “hardcore midget wrestling.”

According to the DU constitution and bylaws, when a chapter is under reorganization status, a committee of DU alumni and staff is given full power over the chapter’s operations for the duration of the investigation. The committee has the power to move members to alumni status.

Tommy Smithburg, president of NU’s Delta Upsilon chapter, released a statement Tuesday evening:

In dealing with our recent challenges, this chapter will be taking the following steps to move forward:

  1. Work to build better men,
  2. Increase our service in the community, and
  3. Help lead the Greek community to align its actions with the mission of the University.

We are confident the result of these steps will help our Fraternity to become a positive contributor to the campus community.

A brother in the fraternity described DU as in the process of “turning a corner as a fraternity,” citing its increased philanthropic and fundraising efforts. Members are not sure whether further action will be taken by the university, but expressed pride in the fraternity’s brotherhood and a desire to remain on campus.

After The Daily Northwestern published a story about the event, national media, including NBC and Fox News, picked up the story. DU also had midget wrestlers perform in 2003 without facing disciplinary action.
