The only fashion accessories you need to survive DM
Thought 1: You’ve been a CEO. You’ve been a corporate ho. But have you ever dressed for a three-hour party called “Get Your Bear On”? What about “Pirates, Punks and Playas”? Or “It’s Complicated With…”? I didn’t think so.
Thought 2: You’ve got the dancer kickoff packet reminding you that “space is limited, however, so please make sure you bring ONLY the necessities! Remember, you are only allowed to bring 1 easily transportable bag to DM.”
Does anyone see where these two ideas might, oh, I don’t know — conflict? You’re not going to want to lug ten outfits worth of clothes to Norris, so follow this guide to learn how to get two or three outfits, out of just three items.
The Items: Sunglasses or some other equally “cool” accessory, brightly colored shirt, discerning eye
The Blocks: “Searchlights and Showstoppers” and “Get Your Bear On”
Although “Searchlights and Showstoppers” instructs you to “dress like your favorite musical or TV/cartoon character,” this is the first block: You’re going to want to go big, and nothing’s bigger than dressing like a celebrity. And nothing says “I’m a big deal” like a brightly colored shirt to attract the attention of all those around you. However, pairing this shirt with some sunglasses will let everyone know that you are, in fact, cooler than them and shouldn’t be messed with. Add the discerning, judgmental eye (bonus: it’s free and easily achieved), and you’ve got yourself a celebrity-inspired outfit to get through the first three hours.
This look serves a dual purpose, however, so bring it on back for the last block, “Get Your Bear On.” In the final stretch, you’ll be jamming to Top 40s music and any celebrity get-up is certain to match this theme. Think about it, the image of Paris Hilton and the lyrics to Crank That (Soulja Boy) go together quite nicely, right?
The Items: Afro, bell bottoms, funky belt
The Blocks: “It’s Complicated With…” and “Kaplan’s I Will Survive”
Admittedly, the union of these two blocks calls for a little more imagination than the previous one, but all you need to do is pack clothes that match and have a bit of a ’70s flare to them. For “Kaplan’s I Will Survive” block, you’re going for a ’70s disco-type look, so combine the afro, bell bottoms and funky belt. You’ll look dy-no-mite! Don’t forget the sunglasses you have on hand. Put those babies on to create an even groovier look.
For “It’s Complicated With,” the goal is to match your partner. Ditch the afro, hike up the jeans and tuck in the shirt (to make the belt buckle more prominent). By doing this you and your partner will achieve a matching down-home, country style suitable for any Peggy Ann and Billy Bob. Square dancing in this outfit is highly encouraged.
The Items: Large T-shirt, Adidas (or Keds), and a gold chain
The Blocks: “Smells like DM Spirit,” “Apple’s Old Schoolhouse Rock” and “Pirates, Punks and Playas”
It may seem like a lot of blocks are squeezed in here, but you really only need three items to complete all of the looks. With themes like the ’80s and favorite clothes from middle school (which are pretty much one and the same stylistically), “Smells like DM Spirit” and “Apple’s Old Schoolhouse Rock” are calling on dancers to remember the good old days of roomy t-shirts, Adidas and the original giant gold necklaces. So, dust off that chain from the pimps and hos party you annually frequent, and add a shirt and some sneakers to create a look the 10-year-old in you would love. Make it a No Fear shirt, and you’re back in junior high.
Gold chains and Adidas seem fitting if you’re going for the “Playas” aspect of “Pirates, Punks, and Playas”. If not, bring some scissors to cut up your T-shirt to create a punked-out look. If you want to be a pirate, replace the gold chain with other bling and rip off a strip of the T-shirt to use as a headband, a la Jack Sparrow.
The Items: Tropical print shirt, straw hat and a lei
The Blocks: “STA’s Frequent Fliers” and “Whole Foods’ You Got Served”
For “STA’s Frequent Fliers,” the brighter and more colorful the costume, the better. Start with a tropical print shirt (preferably something with pineapples or other fruit on it). Throw on a lei and a straw hat. Add some rouge to create a sunburned look, typical of any vacationer. If you’re feeling extra resourceful, the sunglasses from all the way back in the first block will add a touch more flavor.
When you switch it over to the “Whole Foods’ You Got Served” block, you already have your fruit-print shirt. To add a little extra flair, use the holes in the straw hat to dangle cutouts of fruit around the rim. You can do this by clipping the cutouts to paper clips and hooking the clips through the straw.
The Items: Pajamas or onesie
The Block: “Chicago Tribune/Red Eye’s Where Are They Now?”
With specified items like onesies and pajamas, this block stands in a category by itself. While you can get away with wearing a t-shirt and some sweatpants, if there is ever a time to splurge on an outfit, this is it. Nothing beats the comfort of genuine pajamas, especially when you’ve been dancing for 24 hours. Zip yourself into that onesie and remember the days when napping was a staple, not a luxury.
With only a few easy-to-find accessories and clothing items, you now have an ample array of clothing compilations that will keep you stylin’ for thirty hours strong.
