Officials shed light onto two DM dancers
Northwestern and Evanston authorities offered some details Tuesday about what happened to two Dance Marathon participants who collapsed early Sunday morning.
Just before the end the marathon, the two collapsed in Club DM, a heated tent set up on the south lawn of Norris to accomodate this year’s record number of dancers.
“One appears to be someone passing out and one was a seizure,” said Kevin Kelly, a division chief with Evanston Fire and Life-Safety Services. Before the girls collapsed and DM was temporarily halted, the song playing in the tent featured the use of strobe lights.
DM officials quickly cleared an area around the two girls, called for medical attention and rushed boxes of water to the other participants.
Northwestern police responded to a call at 12:22 a.m. on Sunday that a 19-year-old female Northwestern student at Norris was feeling light-headed, but was conscious and alert, said Daniel McAleer, assistant chief of university police. She signed a waiver of release and refused to be taken to a hospital.
At 12:31 a.m., police got another call that a 20-year-old dancer may have been experiencing a seizure, McAleer said. She was evaluated by Evanston Fire and was taken to the hospital.
He added that the number of DM, police and Norris personnel meant that “response time and handling was not a problem at all.”
Both Kelly and McAleer said they could not provide an update to the current condition of the girls.
