I don't remember when I first read this article. It was before the first winter I experienced in Chicago, and I was somewhat crestfallen reading about the marinaded socks and the slush.
It just so happened there were no marinaded socks or slush for me. Or wine or philosophy (with the exception of semi-philosophical, late night "deep conversation" with my friend) or long nights in the library or watching flurries fall onto Lake Michigan.
Instead I made do with a passable GPA, spending much time reading magazines and planning my escape route, watching my roommate come in with loads of books and talk about what she is going to write for her latest essay, wondering why doing my already minimal schoolwork was like dragging a knife through stone.
Walking through blinding snow, weighed down with 50 pounds of equipment, in search for the day's "source" and wishing that a truck would lose control and send me flying.
I do have positive things to say about my experience at Northwestern. Walking on the rare warm day with a friend from class, speaking in Italian. Laughing and dancing in public. Proclaiming undying love for a professor. Using Adobe video software to make an over-the-top project for language class. When I was alone, I rarely reflected on college because when I was afraid that when I stopped laughing, I would start crying.
I think that people are happy here at Northwestern is because they adapt and focus on the best of their situation and would say the same thing about most any other school. Which is what everyone should do of course.
I can hardly express my envy.

I can't believe I hadn't read this until now. With my first year at NU almost over, I've been going through a mini crisis as to what I'm doing here and why I'm beginning to pay the bills for next year. I can see so much of what you say in my personal NU experience and I'm encouraged to continue on for the whore package. Thanks for this piece!

Awesome article that really captures the spirit of NU. And you know it when you see a full page of comments and only one negative one... on NBN, that's a miracle!

Love Northwestern; hated the article. Poorly written with childish use of vulgar words. I sincerely hope that this was written by a 17 year old Wildcat wannabe, and not by a genuine NU graduate. If written by a Northwestern graduate, then clearly the author should demand & receive a full refund of four years tuition.

Wow.. great job on the article. Like you, I have always wanted to attend Northwestern. I don't really know exactly how I fell in love with it! Mind you, I come all the way from Bahrain, a country where students only know the names of the Ivys. Anyway, I've decided on not applying for NU but for the NU-Qatar campus. I hope i get in so I'll have my chance of attending the main campus somewhere during 2011.
