The Daily Northwestern…April 18

Though no one was guarding the Rock yesterday as tradition demands, it seems The Daily Northwestern is responsible for today’s Rock.

Written in gold on a white background are the words: “The Daily Whitewash This.” The Rock’s front wall got a makeover as well, as “Crushing upstarts since 1881: Who reads magazines anyway?” was written across the top.

According to its Web site, the student newspaper was founded in 1881 and publishes 130 issues during the school year, Monday through Friday.

  2. Was this worth posting? Only the staff of NBN would care that they were rocked up.

  5. that’s funny cause i walked by the rock last night and it looked totally different. it said “the daily – still the gold standard” and the rock was painted gold. and the front wall said “the only thing nbn ever beat us to..since 1881.”
in fact, you can see the pictures of them painting it on facebook.

i think what happened here was nbn or crc kids then whitewashed it, then the daily painted over it again, saying “whitewash this.”

honestly, nbn staffers, if you’re allowed to paint the rock and enjoy your overhyped triumph for a couple of days, then allow the daily (those misbegotten souls) to assert itself as well.

whoever painted over it is lame. however, the rivalry is healthy. it was good that someone came around to change things up. let’s keep it going. its amazing that for such a good j-school, northwestern student publications arent as amazing as they should be.

    sad.

  7. While I can’t know what every NBN staffer were doing last night, I know that as soon as the ones in our ‘newsroom’ saw the photos posted to Facebook and went to see the Rock (about 2 a.m.), it had already been painted over in white.

If any NBN staffer did whitewash The Daily’s Rock, I’ll be mortified, because that’s mean-spirited, tacky and unacceptable.

  8. Student: are you not a Daily staffer? For someone who’s apparently not, you sure know a lot about the inside details, including exactly what last night’s Rock looked like and said. “overhyped”? you also have quite the ax to grind.

I’m impressed, though, that the Daily thinks enough people care about this campus-media feud to paint over the Rock.

  9. Shouldn’t it be startups? As in “crushing startup publications since 1881,” not upstarts. Looks like the daily could’ve used an on-site copy editor…

    Hmmm...
