Suspect in Theta intrusion faces felony charges

An Evanston resident has received three felony charges after he was arrested at Kappa Alpha Theta on suspicion of intruding Friday morning, Northwestern officials said Monday.

Stephen Manning, 24, faces charges of trespassing in two women’s bedrooms and for possession of cocaine, Assistant Chief of University Police Daniel McAleer said Monday.

Police arrested Manning at about 3:30 a.m. Friday, after residents reported seeing an intruder on the third floor of the sorority house, Vice President of University Relations Al Cubbage said. Manning was arrested last year on suspicion of trespassing in Chapin Hall, though he faced no charges.

This is the second intrusion in the Theta house this year, following a similar incident Fall Quarter.

There was no sign of forced entry, and Manning told police that he followed a couple through a doorway.

Manning was identified by residents within the house and on the building’s closed-circuit camera system.

His court date is set for May 9 in Skokie.

  1. It is mind boggling to me that even with all the recent emphasis on safety after the similar incidents in the fall, someone could still unwittingly let an intruder into the Theta house. With only 40 or so people living in an all-female house, every resident knows who should and should NOT be there at 330 am. Open your eyes and pay attention, girls, how dumb can you be? Use common sense!! Fool me once…
