Battlestar Galactica: “The Road Less Traveled”
Two things: I’m a girl, and I am a Battlestar Galactica fan. If I weren’t a fan I wouldn’t be writing this recap. So here’s what happened in the latest BSG episode, “The Road Less Traveled.”
Warning! Spoiler Alert!
On the Demetrius, Starbuck is behaving erratically forcing Helo to defend her actions to the crew, who is threatening mutiny if they don’t rendezvous with the fleet in two days. She further alienates the crew when she finds a damaged Heavy Raider with a Leoben on it and decides to bring the cylon on board. Leoben says it’s his destiny to help Starbuck find Earth. He tells the crew about the war that’s broken out between the cyclons and asks Starbuck to have the Demetrius jump to the nearest basestar so that the colonial fleet and the good cylons (Numbers Two, Six and Eight) can team up to fight the bad cylons (Numbers One, Four and Five). Mathias dies while inspecting Leoben’s ship, making the crew believe Leoben is setting up a trap. Despite the death, Starbuck still wants to jump to the basestar. The crew, except for Anders, gets pissed off and rebels. Helo, who tried his hardest to support his captain, relieves Starbuck from command.
Tyrol, who is sporting a new shaved head, is still depressed over Cally’s death and spends his time in the airlock trying to figure out how and why Cally died. Tory tells him Cally was depressed and killed herself but Tyrol doesn’t believe it. She drops hints that maybe Cally found out about the cylons on boards but still doesn’t admit to killing her. Rather, Tory tells Tyrol that he must forget his past and move on just as she has, thanks to Gaius’ advice.
Gaius is enjoying a larger following through pirated radio broadcasts. He continues to preach belief in one true God and the futility of belief in the old non-existent Gods. Tyrol drops in on one of the religious meetings and Gaius, trying to draw a better known figure into his following, asks Tyrol to take his hand, saying that’s what Cally would’ve wanted. Tyrol ends up getting pissed off to the point that he chokes Gaius and has to be pulled off of him. Gaius later visits a slightly suicidal Tyrol in his bunker and apologizes for presuming he knew Cally. Gaius says he knows he’s done unquestionable wrongs but has been given a second chance by God and he truly wants to help people. He says he wishes he had known Cally better. After listening to the speech Tyrol offers Gaius his hand.
Opinion: This week’s episode was definitely more engaging than last week’s, though this could be because it focused on my favorite plots. There was awesome acting all around, especially from Aaron Douglas and Tahmoh Penikett. The best scene was definitely the one between Gaius and Tyrol (though the mutiny is a close second). I never thought it could be possible, but I think I’m starting to like Gaius.
Quotation of the Week: Captain Thrace, as XO of the Demetrius and acting under Article 10 of the Colonial Military Code I’m hereby relieving you of command. - Helo
Next Week: Starbuck is on a basestar and meets with a hybrid. The hybrid goes crazy and tells Starbuck that she’s the harbinger of death (as Kendra Shaw was warned in Razor) and will lead everyone to the end. On the Demetrius, Athena-Sharon has Starbuck in a chokehold, someone threatens to airlock her and Anders shoots Gaeta.

I still think it’s pretty bad. I’m disappointed with the show so far this season. I was talking to a friend (who I introduced BSG to a couple years ago) and she also think it’s been terrible this season.
