Online tributes to Eight Belles
Looks like Barbaro’s got some company in famous horse heaven. Eight Belles, a filly who finished second at this weekend’s Kentucky Derby, broke her front ankles, and was euthanized on the track. The online world quickly responded, creating tribute videos and all sorts of other media to honor the life of the fallen horse. Most YouTube offerings resemble this video.
I know next to nothing about horse racing, so I’m curious how people develop such strong relations to a horse that prompts them to overflow YouTube with tribute videos like the one above. Charlton Heston didn’t get this much love, and he was Moses.
I think this video, featuring the song “My Immortal” and some really bizarre moments, really sums up everything.

WE LOVED BARBARO.. AND WE WILL MISS HIM SO…
WHEN I SAW EIGHT BELLE ON TV GETTING READY FOR THE KENTUCKY DERBY RACE,AND LISTENED TO HER STORY BEING TOLD, I SAID THATS AN AMAZING MARE AND SHE’S GONNA WIN.. SHE RAN HER HEART OUT AND DID WHAT SHE KNEW SHE COULD FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVED AND TOOK CARE OF HER.. IM SO SAD THAT SHE WONT BE AROUND.. LARRY JONES YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB TRAINING HER.. SHE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY…

I’m soooo sorry about Barbaro and Eight Belles. I love horses and all animals for that fact. I’m extremely sadden by what happened to both horses and would love to see this never happen again! We need to put in place things that can stop these types of tragedies from happening in the first place. We have to ask ourselves is it just synthetic types of tracks we need or is greed playing too big of a part to even make a difference? Let’s take a moment to pray for these horses and think about their wonderful lives and how special they were. They will never be missed!
