More than 150 students join fraternities on first night of rush
Winter recruitment for Northwestern’s fraternities officially began Tuesday night, when IFC chapters offered dinner, special activities and invitations to join the fraternity.
These membership invitations, or “bids,” can be given out until recruitment ends on Jan. 10, but some chapters confirm the majority of their pledge class on the first night. Pi Kappa Alpha President Bill Pulte confirmed that his fraternity has received 21 accepted bids, the most of any of the houses thus far.
“We’re absolutely ecstatic,” said Pulte, a Medill junior, crediting some of the fraternity’s recruitment success to their good relations with the university. “[Our accepted bids] are a testament not only to the brotherhood, but the organization we set up, the very successful functioning — the staying out of trouble.”
Pulte said he plans to cap Pike’s 2009 pledge class with 30 members.
Stop, look and listen to audio and photos from last year's sorority Bid Night. Or you can return home.

So if you don’t get a bid the first night, what happens? You keep going to events all week? It’s a different approach to rush – many other schools hold rush weeks and then bids are extended at the end of the week.

Pike is one of those houses you love or hate. I personalt have been openly harrassed by their members while walking by the house for no reason. I have a very high respect for NBN, but they should talk about more than one house.

I agree with Greek. Pike’s standing at their door tend to be arrogant and sometimes even rude towards people passing by the front of their house and any experience I’ve had with intramural sports at NU has involved Pike guys being by far the most aggressive and unfriendly. As a Junior, I only know a few guys in Pike I can actually have good conversation with and many are often abrasive in their treatment of me. I guess they fit the fraternity stereotype?

While I may agree with the comments by JP and Greek, I feel it’s unfair to discuss opinions about a certain chapter in this forum. Any member of the Greek community can attest to how messy that can get, thanks to a certain blog. So, in spite of my private feelings about Pike, congratulations to them and their pledge class.

Typical pike fashion they let in whoever will drop the first night… quantity over quality.

You’ve got to wonder if they were “absolutely ecstatic” about their alpha pledge leaving to join another fraternity. What kind of testament is that?

Somebody is bitter.
Well, third night of rush, just hand out bids, may be you will hit 25.

Um is this going to be updated anytime soon? These numbers reflect the first night only.

This is not the first night only for most of the houses, at least. But they do not represent Thursday either.

Pike’s President, Bill Pulte, has done great work in getting Pike on-campus, but has gone farther and turned Pike more into what JP is describing. Obnoxious. They seem to give a bid to anyone with a pulse.

why is everybody talking about Pike? look, zbt and sigma chi got more pledges than anybody else. of course, there is a huge trade-off between quality and quantity but still. congrats for winning, at least quantity wise.
BEST FRATERNITY ON CAMPUS, ZBT. haha

PIKE didn’t give us a choice and forced us to drop our bids. Without our own knowing we had to sign papers immediately that bascially said we dropped, even though we didn’t.

This breakdown is good, and actually shows the days that matter: Tuesday and Wednesday, when the best guys dropped. The rest of the days are when the few undecideds and the scraps dropped.

it is funny how people talk shit about Pike. Well, I agree with meats, the first 2 days, the quality guys got their bids. the rest of the weeks, some frats collected the remnants.

Yeah, but doesn’t the grid show when bids were accepted? No one sat on their bid?

By the way, these stats are wrong. I’m a fraternity rush chair and have access to the official statistics, and SAE is at 26 pledges, not 30. The breakdown was 10-6-6-2-2

What “alpha pledge” went somewhere else?

The official university stats say that SAE got 26 pledges through the first 5 days of rush (ending Saturday night). It’s possible but unconfirmed that SAE got 4 more pledges after rush week ended.
