FYI – Buffalo Wild Wings is currently renovating to open a location just south of Chili’s on Maple Avenue near the Century Theatres in Evanston.

There used to be a place called Yesterday’s at the corner of Sherman and University that was a GREAT sports bar/restaurant. But then again I’m a 1999 grad.

I wasn’t calling you specifically a blind nationalist, because that would be an undue characterization, but statements like “Also, anyone who GOES TO NU and is a sports fan has NO EXCUSE for not following NU sports” sounds like dangerous hive mentality to ask of other fans.

I like rooting for NU teams; I take pride when the school does well and get upset when we don’t do well. But feeling allegiance to an institution doesn’t come naturally to everyone, based on their own experiences and interactions at the school…I know plenty of sports fans who haven’t had extraordinary NU experiences. If they feel no connection to the school, why should they automatically root for the teams? Do you need to feel a connection to your university to have a meaningful experience? Can you have a positive college experience without ever feeling like a “Wildcat” or a “Tar Heel” or a “Blue Devil”? I think so, which is why following your school’s sports team should be a choice, not a mandatory option.

That being said, I do take great pride in going to this university and rooting for MY PEERS who are competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Why other people don’t, I don’t know, but I wish they would.

IF that makes me “a blind nationalist” so be it, but believe me, it has nothing to do with the tuition as you imply.

Anyways, I don’t know where you got the idea that I’m some “blind nationalist” without any other interests. We’ve had like one class dude, you don’t know me at all.

It’s very easy to be devoted to NU sports and to have other interests.

The worst types of people? Wow, harsh language – I might have saved that kind of labeling for the conquistadors or the Gestapo, but you’re right, apathetic sports fans are up there. Hyperbole, I’m sure – but why?

There are plenty of other things to care about besides sports – you don’t have to follow everything, nor should you have to. That Northwestern students aren’t slavishly into “EVERY NU team” as you would have them is perhaps indicative of a more alarming trend: They’ve found multiple things to invest in and be excited about, rather than one pursuit. But, no, that I pay to go to this institution totally means I should become a blind nationalist based on nothing but the annual $50,000 donation I make to the school.

I really wish you wouldn’t include the disclaimer: “I know Northwestern hasn’t always been the most amazing at sports.”

Northwestern’s history has nothing to do with the present. As of right now, we are one of the TOP 40 SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY at sports.

Also, anyone who GOES TO NU and is a sports fan has NO EXCUSE for not following NU sports. Those are the worst types of people. I almost prefer people who just don’t care about sports at all. If you like sports, and go to NU, you should be fully behind EVERY NU team.

And Nevins does count as a sports bar in my opinion, but I’m definitely in favor of getting another one closwer to campus!

It is ridiculous though that not a single bar in Evanston gets the MLB network and most don’t have enough TVs to watch more than one game at once. We aren’t all Cubs fans…

I believe it has to do with the price of an establishment and getting a liquor license in Evanston. Case in point, both 7-11 in Evanston don’t sell liquor
