NU Ski Team paints the Rock: May 19

The Northwestern Ski Team painted the Rock on Tuesday to advertise their “Ballin’ for Charity” volleyball tournament. It’s taking place May 23 at 10 a.m. at the North Beach Courts. There will be free food and live music. It costs $35 to register a team. Up to six people can be on a team. Students should register online at nuskiteam.com.

NU Women’s Rugby paints the Rock: May 15

Northwestern’s women’s rugby team painted the Rock on Friday, May 15 to promote their game the next day against the University of Chicago. The Wildcats trounced the competition, winning the game 49-0.

Delta Chi paints the Rock: May 14

The members of the fraternity Delta Chi painted the Rock on Thursday to advertise their spring philanthropy event, Island in the Sun: Beach Party. The event takes place at the beach north of campus. It starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 and costs $7 for entry.

Relay for Life paints the Rock: May 13

Relay for Life painted the Rock on Tuesday night to advertise their fundraiser, which is taking place tonight at The 1800 Club (nicknamed “Hundo”), located at 1800 Sherman Ave. There will be a $10 open bar and a $3 cover charge. Relay for Life starts this Friday and goes through Saturday.

SAI paints the Rock: May 12

Zeta paints the Rock: May 8

The members of the sorority Zeta Tau Alpha painted the Rock on Friday to advertise their Light the Way luminary event, taking place from the Arch to the Rock at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10. If you wish to support the fight against breast cancer, you may purchase a pink ribbon from any Zeta for $1.

DZ paints the Rock: May 7

The members of the sorority Delta Zeta painted the Rock on Thursday to advertise their spring philanthropy event, Jello Wars. The event takes place on Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m. on the Norris South Lawn.

Unfortunately, poor weather affected the appearance of the Rock. The Rock was originally painted with a black background with lime green spray-paint lettering.

Kaibigan paints the Rock: May 6

Kaibigan, Northwestern University’s Filipino Student Association painted the Rock on Wednesday to advertise their Pinoy Show 2009. The show will take place Saturday, May 16th in Tech Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.

In consideration to The Shmaily, the previous painter of the Rock, the Kaibigan painters left the Web site’s URL painted on the front wall. Information for the Pinoy Show is painted to the right on the wall. The Shmaily and Kaibigan are not affiliated with each other.

The Shmaily paints the Rock: May 4

The Rock was painted on Monday to advertise the launch of a new website, The Shmaily. An NU-centric satirical website in the vein of The Onion, it bills itself as “Northwestern’s Third Best News Source.”

PASA paints the Rock: May 2

The Polish-American Student Alliance painted the Rock on Saturday to celebrate Polish Constitution Day, which is today, May 3. Chicago’s parade is the largest celebration for the holiday outside of Poland.

The Rock was painted on Thursday to advertise the Take Back the Night march protesting violence against women. The participants met for a barbecue at 6:30 p.m., followed by a rally and march at the Rock.

NU LAX paints the Rock: April 24

The Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse team painted the Rock on Friday to advertise their Saturday game against the University of Pennsylvania at Lakeside Field. According to NUsports.com, Northwestern won 11-9.

NCDC paints the Rock: April 22

The Northwestern Community Development Corp (NCDC) painted the Rock on Wednesday to advertise their upcoming Arts Fest event. The event is taking place this Sunday, April 26, on both Norris lawns from 12 to 5 p.m.

Although painting was completed on Tuesday night, members of NCDC stayed near the Rock throughout the day, encouraging group members and passers-by to help them continue painting.

Theta paints the Rock: April 17

The women of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta painted the Rock on Friday to advertise their spring philanthropy event, Mr. CASAnova, taking place this Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Center Forum.

From the Facebook group: “Mr. CASAnova is a male beauty pageant featuring contestants from NU’s greek fraternities — the contestants will compete in swimwear, talent, and denim competitions to become MR. CASAnova 2009! 80% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Theta’s national philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), an organization that seeks to provide foster children a voice in court. The remaining funds will split between the Friendship Fund of the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, which provides financial support for women in need, and the philanthropy of the winning contestant’s choice. Raffle prizes have been donated from: Kafein, EAC, Hot Mama, Campus Solutions, Lulu Lemon, Giordano’s dance.”
