SHIFT paints the Rock: Nov. 19

Members of the Secular Humanists for Inquiry & Freethought brought the Darwin fish to the Rock Thursday. SHIFT is a newly founded student group that advocates “religious freedom and freedom from religion.”

Glee: “Ballad”

As an education major, I tend to freak out when I hear of forbidden teacher-student relationships, real or not. Yet in Glee, it was surprisingly entertaining (not to mention frightening) to watch Rachel pine for Will, and then to see Will take appropriate precautions — thank you boundaries! And yes, this does actually happen. And [...]

The Hills: “Can’t Always Get What You Want”

First of all, since when did Brody start playing pool like he was at some Southern Illinois pub? Déclassé, Brody. Extremely déclassé.
And then I see Kristin walking down the sidewalk to have dinner with Jayde. My heart was seriously racing. No doubt when Kristin sat down Jayde already had a few drinks in her, only [...]

What we learned against Butler: We need Kevin Coble

In Northwestern’s 67-54 defeat to #10 Butler at Welsh-Ryan Arena Wednesday night, there was clearly one thing missing: Kevin Coble.
The senior forward will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot, taking away his 15.5 points per game with him. Given the vast [...]

Cast and crew of the Purple Crayon Players’ fall play Holes painted the Rock midnight Wednesday. The adaptation of Louis Sachar’s well-known novel runs Thursday through Saturday at the Shanley Pavilion. Tickets are $5.

House: “Teamwork”

House took a turn to the carnal on this week’s episode, with the soon-to-be patient, Hank (Troy Garity), collapsing from hypersensitivity to light while on the set of a pornographic film in which he was starring. Are we surprised that House (Hugh Laurie) snatched up this case so quickly?
Episode Summary
We open with where we left [...]

More than 1500 show up for first day of H1N1 vaccinations

University Health Services, in conjunction with the Evanston Department of Health and Human Services, began providing free H1N1 vaccinations to students on Tuesday. The vaccinations, which health officials administered between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Patten Gymnasium and Norris Student Center, were reserved for “priority groups” on Tuesday, which includes anyone between the ages [...]

Lopez Tonight: “Premiere”

The commercials in the months leading up to George Lopez’s talk show may have given off the impression that it would be a program worth watching. After all, President Obama wouldn’t appear in an ad campaign for and lend his slogan to a televised train wreck, right?
Wrong.
Lopez Tonight kicked off last week on TBS. [...]

Kari in Florence: The navel of the world

Kari will be in Florence, Italy until Dec. 17.

I can honestly say that I love Florence and that I’m very glad to be spending my time abroad here, but sometimes it seems a little small. Rome, on the other hand, has somehow been able to maintain the feel of an enormous living and working city [...]

Yippee-Ki-Yay, Mr. Falcon

It’s understandable that the FCC has to uphold some standard of decency in broadcast media (think of the children!). Some movies, though, are so steeped in questionable content that they should stay off the airwaves — not so much to protect the innocence of the viewers as to preserve the artistic integrity of the films [...]

Julie in Paris: In which I pass judgment

Julie will be in Paris, France until Dec. 17.

My sociology professor would kill me if she read this post.
She’s always saying three months is not enough time to pass judgment on an entire culture, that we’re too Americanized to admit that our way might not be the best and that our arguments aren’t nuanced enough.
Of [...]

Fanfarlo: Reservoir

Fanfarlo in action. Photo by kata rokkar on Flickr, licensed under Creative Commons.

Read our Q&A with frontman Simon Balthazar.
Fanfarlo sounds familiar. With all the press the band has received for its unassuming orchestral indie pop, the London-based quintet has permeated blogs and radio with its well-crafted songs ornate enough to catch your ear, but laid [...]

Roosevelt Institute paints the Rock: Nov. 13

Members of the Northwestern chapter of the Roosevelt Institute painted the Rock to promote the Illinois Youth Town Hall event, which will be held Sunday afternoon at Dyett High School to address violence, unemployment and access to education among young people in the state. The Roosevelt Institute is a network of college student think tanks [...]

Zoe in Jerusalem: When peace became partisan

Zoe will be in Jerusalem, Israel until January 2.

Yitzhak Rabin is Israel’s John F. Kennedy: a fighter for change, a symbol of hope and an assassinated national leader, forever engraved in national memory as a pioneer for peace.
On November 4, 1995, Rabin was murdered by Yigal Amir, a radical, religious Jew.  Amir [...]
