10 songs Northwestern wants to hear at Dance Marathon

NU’s coolest and sweatiest annual tradition is upon us. While the rest of us basic bitchez prepare for our at best mediocre weekends, others are prepping for a weekend of fanny packs, sweaty low contrast iPhone pictures, neon apparel, and, of course, great music. In honor of our fellow students braving the chaos and conviviality for charity, here are some song requests from some of Northwestern’s own Fred-Astaires-in-training.

    1. “Best Day of My Life” – American Authors

“It’s so upbeat. I always get hyped when I hear it and I think at DM we need all the hype we can get in order to make it through 30 hours.” – Henry Castellani, WCAS ‘18

    2. “Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix A Lot or “Tunak Tunak Tun” – Daler Mehndi

“Baby Got Back is just a hilarious song and super fun to rap to.”

“I also probably want the song “Tunak Tunak Tun” which is an Indian song that a lot of Americans seem to know -  then all my friends can do the fun Indian dance steps I’ve taught them.” – Aarohi Shah, WCAS ‘15

    3. “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada

“It’s pumpin. It gets you going.” – Marcellus Traynor, MEAS ‘18

    4. “Anaconda” – Nicki Minaj or “7/11” – Beyoncé

“Yoncé is queen and I like to get ratchet with Minaj.” – Genesis Garcia, WCAS ‘18

    5. “Shake Body” – Skales or “Dorrobucci” - Mavins

“Afrobeats, the African equivalent of hip hop, usually from West Africa - That’s the kind of music that really gets me dancing.” – Amakie Amattey, WCAS ‘17

    6. Anything by Childish Gambino

Writer’s rec: IV. sweatpants, Freaks and Geeks, or Heartbeat

“Because… Childish Gambino.” – Chris Hartman, MEAS ‘18

    7. Throwback Disney Music

Writer’s rec: Circle of Life from Lion King

“Something which would motivate the dancers and really get people moving and kind of in a different attitude than the normal pop or rap or music people are used to.” – Janessa Engelmeyer, WCAS ‘18

    8. “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan

“It’s one of my favorite pump-up songs.” – Alex Sher, Medill ‘18

“Songs that are more soulful, you know?” – Margot Zuckerman, WCAS ‘18
