Nightwalk
By

    Evening. Lights shining
    All around us, each one
    Winking, offering, softly drawing,
    As we walked along
    The streets, bright streets which
    Shadows never claimed,
    Laughing, talking.
And some lights went out, but
    We kept on walking
    To nowhere, with no place
    Our goal. They beamed,
    Took our hands, and tried
    Their best to lead, through
    Alleyway, field, and alleyway.
And yet, for all their trouble, we missed
    The city’s winking promises.
