Multicultural fraternity Omega Delta Phi held its Second Annual Cesar Chavez Day of Service with several community-oriented projects Saturday. The event, created by Weinberg senior Anthony Iglesias, is meant to commemorate the March 31 birthday of activist Cesar Chavez, co-founder of the now-United Farm Workers union.
As part of the event, members of Omega Delta Phi volunteered at the main branch of the Evanston Public Library with bilingual readings of children's literature, workshops and a photo booth.
"The overall goal for this program is to educate the Northwestern community about César Chávez and the United Farm Workers’ movement," Iglesias said in a release. "The chapter hopes to serve and improve the surrounding Latino communities through volunteer efforts. In addition, the program serves to diminish the psychological gap between Northwestern’s predominately white, suburban campus and Chicago’s diverse urban communities."
