Thomas Friedman to speak at Schapiro inauguration

When Morton Schapiro officially takes the reins as Northwestern’s president on Oct. 9 in Deering field, he will be joined by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, according to a University press release.

Friedman will speak during the inauguration ceremony and will participate, earlier that same day, in a symposium called “Big Ideas and Challenges” with Schapiro.

Inauguration festivities will last from Oct. 7 to Oct. 10 and will be characterized by “pomp and circumstance, talks and music, and events on Northwestern’s Evanston and Chicago campuses,” according to the press release.

The inauguration planning committee, headed by Sarah Pearson, vice president for alumni relations and development, will also work in conjunction with student groups to “bring a major music performer or band for a concert the evening of Friday, Oct. 9.”
