Google Bus comes to Rock, educates about apps

Photos by Julie Beck / NBN.

Hordes of students flocked to a tent in front of the Rock on Friday to learn about Google’s free e-products and to receive free Frisbees, whiteboards and stickers from the famous mega-company.
The eco-friendly Google Bus, which is bio-diesel and solar powered, made the final stop on its “App to School” [...]

T-mobile releases first Google phone

Early Tuesday morning, T-mobile introduced the first phone to run Google’s Android software, the T-mobile G1.
Hits:

Google Apps. Gmail and Gchat, hurrah!
Amazon MP3 Store
Apps run in the background. Is your iPhone jealous?
Wifi and 3G connectivity
Android Market. Just like Apple’s App Store.
Google Maps. I guess this is a Google App. But it needs it’s own catergory because [...]

Google’s GrandCentral: Great for Medill kids

GrandCentral was founded back in 2005 and it was acquired by Google soon after. It’s by no means a new service. According to its Web site, its mission is not to “replace your phone… [but] just link them together and help them do more.” And they do that by giving you a brand new number [...]

Follow-up: Facebook Chat is pretty lame

About two weeks ago, the Northwestern Facebook network was blessed with Facebook Chat by the Patron Saint of Procrastination, Mark Zuckerberg. More than enough time has passed to hand down judgment on the feature, and figure out how radically it has changed lives and brought about a mass kumbya session between North and South [...]

Who wouldn’t want to work for Google

Google’s Zurich offices might the the coolest place to work in world. Equipped with a slide, a projector with Guitar Hero hooked in, a fireman’s pole, a fish tank room and other cool gizmos, it seems you really can’t go wrong. I assume - given the nature of other Google offices - that the food [...]

A glance at Google’s Android

Google’s Android team has finally released a video showing how the open source software actually functions. While I wasn’t too impressed with the budget phone model, I was highly impressed by the higher-end, touch-based model.

The Good:
- Google Streetview
- Games (Quake anyone?)
- 3D graphic capabilities
- 3G enabled (though it’s unclear what device the software is running [...]

The Google Phone arrives! Sorta.

Today, on the heels of countless rumors in the blogosphere, Google announced its plans to revolutionize the mobile phone. It’s called Android and it’s really not a Google Phone at all. It’s a mobile operating system (somewhat similar to Windows Mobile) for other phone manufactures. The announcement of Android came paired with announcement of the [...]

Google’s stock jumps, Google Phone set to arrive?

The recent months caused Google’s stock to jump from around $500 per share to just over $700 per share. The reason? Tech and market analysts are predicting that in the coming weeks Google will announce its dive into the cell phone market. While most initially expected Google to produce its own handset, many are now [...]

Google, The Gap, Peace Corps at career expo

The second floor of Norris was packed Monday with pinstriped suits and résumé-toting seniors for this year’s Campus Recruiting Expo.
Spread across six rooms were 91 company booths adorned with banners and free gifts. Macquarie Holdings passed out tote bags while Discover Financial Services attracted potential employees with candy.
Next to the bustling Discover booth [...]

It’s like that creepy uncle that follows your sister around…only worse

Despite desperate pleas to my extended family to STOP sending me those annoying forwards (most specifically e-mails threatening death if I don’t forward them on to some ridiculous amount of people), my dearest kinfolk still manage to spam my inbox almost every day.
So I’ve decided that if I’m going to have to waste my time [...]

Google to buy YouTube?

It’s somewhat speculative right now, but the Wall Street Journal reports Google is interested in buying YouTube.
Whether or not it actually happens, you can see the trends in online media:
Social media matters. Google already has its own prominent video service, but YouTube succeeds because it just feels so much more of a social site, and [...]
